An optical illusion causes the appearance of ‘triple suns’. This rare celestial illusion of “triple suns” was recently captured above Chifeng in the Inner Mongolia region in the north of China
A rare illusion of what looks like three separate suns, has recently been seen in the sky over northern China, with some residents reporting sightings of five “suns”, along with a rainbow-like halo. In the same way that a rainbow forms, the halo of light is produced when the sun’s rays are refracted and reflected through water particles in the atmosphere, causing the simultaneous rainbow and halo effect.
A sun dog or sundog, scientific name parhelion, (plural parhelia) from Greekπαρήλιον (parēlion), meaning “beside the sun”, also called a mock sun or aphantom sun, is an atmospheric phenomenon that creates bright spots of light in the sky, often on a luminous ring or halo on either side of the sun. It is a naturally occurring atmospheric phenomenon, also known as a “phantom sun”, and can only form in specific conditions when the sun is viewed at a certain angle from earth.

Sundogs may appear as a colored patch of light to the left or right of the sun, 22° distant and at the same distance above the horizon as the sun, and in ice halos. They can be seen anywhere in the world during any season, but they are not always obvious or bright. Sundogs are best seen and are most conspicuous when the sun is low.
It also requires the presence of ice crystals in cirrostratus clouds, which form in altitudes between 5 and 10km in the layer of the earth’s atmosphere known as the troposphere.
Before the science of meteorology was developed, events such as this were used to predict the weather. Ice halos are good indicators of coming rainfall as the crystals that form in the cirrostratus clouds can indicate a coming frontal system.
